What is a Proxy Server?
A proxy server acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. When you use a proxy, your internet traffic flows through the proxy server on its way to the address you requested. The request then comes back through that same proxy server, and the proxy server then forwards the data received from the website to you.
Why Detect Proxies and VPNs?
While proxies and VPNs are powerful tools for enhancing privacy, they can also be used for malicious purposes. Website administrators and online services often use detection tools like this for several reasons:
- Fraud Prevention: To identify users who are trying to hide their true location to commit fraud, such as creating multiple accounts or bypassing regional pricing.
- Content Security: To enforce geo-restrictions and prevent users from outside a specific region from accessing licensed content.
- Bot Detection: Many automated bots and web scrapers operate through large networks of proxy servers. Detecting them helps protect a website's resources.
Interpreting the Results
Our tool will tell you if the entered IP address is a known public proxy or a VPN server. A 'No' result means the IP is likely a standard residential or mobile connection. A 'Yes' result indicates the IP belongs to a data center known for providing these services.
